Abstract

942,777. Rotary joints. FMC CORPORATION. April 24, 1962 [April 24, 1961], No. 15546/62. Heading F2G. A swivel pipe joint specifically for liquefied gases comprises two tubular members 12, 14 having communicating bores 16, 18, and one of which members 12 has an external flange 54, at least one retaining ring 43, 56 detachably secured to the other member 14 in a fluid-tight manner to enclose the flange and to locate the members with respect to each other, and combined bearing and sealing means 48, 50, 52, 58 and 59 between the member 12 and the rings 43, 56 to facilitate the relative rotation of the rings and member while, at the same time, maintaining a substantially fluid-tight seal therebetween. As shown, a pressure ring 30 urged by springs 34 toward the member 12 is formed with a narrow annular shoulder 36 having a flat pressure exerting surface 38, and a sealing ring 40 is disposed between the flange 24 of the member 14 and the member 12 and retaining ring 43. The latter is provided with fluid drain holes 46. The sealing rings 48 . . . 59 may be of a slightly resilient plastic such as " Teflon," " Mylar " or " Kel-F " (Registered Trade Marks) or of metal. The ring 56 is divided diametrically and has a locating shoulder 60.
