942,558. Inductors; resonant cavities; particle accelerators. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. June 20, 1960 [June 20, 1959], No. 21575/60. Headings H1D, HIT and H1W. A variable inductor suitable for altering the frequency of a resonant circuit tunable over a wide frequency band comprising a two-part magnetic core with a magnetizing winding, the two core parts providing two parallel magnetic paths and one having an incremental permeabilitywhich varies rapidly with change of magnetizing current as compared with the other core part at the lower end of the frequency band, the other core part having an incremental permeability varying relatively slowly with change in magnetization of the core and having a relatively high Q factor over the higher end of the frequency band as compared with the first core part. Curves 1 and 2 in Fig. 1, show the relationship between the permeabilities of the two selected materials for different values of the biasing current. More than two ferrite materials may be used. The Specification mentions a number of suitable ferrites. Figs. 4 and 6 show the inductor included in the resonant cavity of a proton synchrotron, the arrangement differing from that described in Specification 932,566, only in the arrangement of the magnetic core which comprises members 14a, 14b which are of the same shape but are made of different ferrite materials.
