Abstract

942,459. Binaural systems. INDUSTRIES MUSICALES ET ELECTRIQUES PATHE MARCONI. March 3, 1960 [March 3, 1959], No. 7550/60. Heading H4R. In apparatus for obtaining pseudostereophonic output signals from an audio-frequency signal of the monaural type provided by a source 2, Fig. 1, a converter 1 derives from a signal obtained from the source 2 two further electrical signals which differ in amplitude and feeds them by channels 3, 4 to an arrangement 5 for deriving a difference signal proportional to the difference in amplitude between the two further signals, or between two modified signals respectively derived from the further signals, and this difference signal is applied to a network 7 which derives the two pseudo-stereophonic output signals, one of which is proportional to the sum of the amplitude of a signal obtained from the source and the amplitude of the difference signal and the other of which is proportional to the difference between the amplitude of said latter signal obtained from the source and the amplitude of the difference signal. The converter 1 may comprise filters F1 to F5, Fig. 2, respectively connected in series with phase-shift elements H1 to H5 and potentiometers K1 to K5 and L1 to L5. Filters F1 and F5 are high and low pass devices respectively and filters F2, F3 and F4 are of the band-pass type. All the potentiometers K are connected to a phase-adjusting element N1 and all the potentiometers L are connected to a phase-adjusting element N2. Transformers P1 and P2 constitute the arrangement 5 and their primary windings are respectively connected in series additive and subtractive arrangement. Transformer P1 is terminated by a load resistor 65 whilst transformer P2 feeds a primary winding of each of transformers Q1 and Q2 (network 7), the other primary windings of which are supplied from the source 2 through a potentiometer 9. The secondary windings of transformers Q1 and Q2 respectively provide signals proportional to the sum and difference between the amplitude of the signal from the source 2 and the output of the secondary winding of transformer P2. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), each channel 3, 4 includes an echo chamber fed by a loud-speaker and housing a microphone. The pseudo-stereophonic output signals may be recorded on tape or disc or may be applied to spaced loud-speakers.
