Abstract
A process for detoxifying town or trunk gas comprises passing the gas at 250 DEG to 450 DEG C., at space velocity of 1000 to 5000 cub. m./h. (S.T.P.) per cub. m. catalyst, and at normal pressure over a preliminary or guard catalyst, and wherein the CO contained in the gas is then converted by reaction with steam at 350 DEG to 450 DEG C. and in the presence of an iron oxide catalyst. When the conversion is carried out at elevated pressure the space velocity over the preliminary catalyst is raised to 5000 to 10,000 cub. m./h. per cub. in. catalyst. The preliminary catalyst, which may contain iron, cobalt, or nickel sulphides, may be used undiluted or applied in 5 to 30% by wt. to carrier materials such as alumina, kieselguhr, or pumice. The catalyst is first introduced as the oxide and then converted into the sulphide by admixture of H2S, CS2, or S with the entering gas. The main catalyst is Fe2O3 and may contain Cr2O3.
