Abstract

The lignin content of a lignocellulosic article is brominated before, during or after formation of the article so as to provide an article having resistance to flame and fungi. The article may be in the form of veneer, paper, hardboard, yarn, woven or knitted fabric, rope, or belting; and may be produced from jute, kenaf, sisal, hemp, or wood. Bromination may be effected with gaseous bromine; a solution thereof in water, chloroform, or carbon tetrachloride; a solution of alkali metal hypobromite; or a solution of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal bromide and bromate which is slowly acidified. The hydrobromic acid produced by the bromination may be washed out or neutralised with ammonia, sodium carbonate, or milk of lime. A buffer, e.g. a mixture of borax and boric acid or of alkali metal or ammonium phosphates, may be present during bromination and may be incorporated in the product in an amount of 0.01-16% to enhance the flameproofing properties. Sodium silicate may be similarly employed.
