Abstract
A coreless cop for a loom shuttle comprises yarn of continuous filaments of synthetic polymeric material, e.g. a polyamide or polyester, which has been treated, prior to winding, by coating the yarn with a non-adhesive thermosetting or thermoplastic compound dissolved or dispersed in a volatile liquid vehicle and then drying the yarn to remove the liquid vehicle so as to cause the yarn to be self-adherent but non-tacky. The coating compound may comprise a nylon polymer, polyvinyl acetate or an acrylic emulsion. In one example, a polyethylene terephthalate filament is twisted and passed through a nylon polymer solution, containing methyl stearate for lubrication, passed over synthetic foam to remove excess moisture and treated in steam. Packages are wound from this yarn after passing it again through a bath of similar solution. The wound packages are exposed in moulds to a temperature of 110 DEG C. and are then cooled suddenly. In another example, nylon yarn is coated with an acrylic emulsion.
