Abstract

An antiperspirant composition comprises 0.001 to 0.25%, and especially 0.005 to 0.2%, by weight, of an anti-cholinergic material which is the free base or acid salt form of a compound of general formula <FORM:0940279/A5-A6/1> wherein <FORM:0940279/A5-A6/2> contains 4 to 12 carbon atoms and is a straight chain aliphatic acyl group, a branched chain aliphatic acyl group, an aromatic acyl group or a cycloaliphatic acyl group, said material being uniformly dispersed in a water-dispersible, dermatogically acceptable vehicle, said composition having a pH of 3 to 6.5 and especially 3 to 5. It is preferred that the group <FORM:0940279/A5-A6/3> contains 4 to 7 carbon atoms. The anti-cholinergic material may be in the form of the chloride, bromide, iodide, nitrate, citrate, acetate, methosulphate, sulphate, phosphate and tartrate. Preferred compounds are n-butyryl scopolamine hydrobromide, trimethylacetyl scopolamine hydrochloride and benzoyl scopolamine hydrobromide. The vehicle may contain 0.1 to 10% by weight of a non-ionic, cationic, anionic or amphoteric surface active agent. Other water-miscible vehicles are water, a monohydric or polyhydric alcohol and a methoxypolyethylene glycol. Optional ingredients are (a) perfumes, (b) dyes, (c) buffers, (d) emulsifiers, (e) thickening agents, (f) humectants, (g) deodorants e.g. hexachlorophene, (h) antibiotics e.g. neomycin, (i) aluminum or zirconium astringent salts. The cosmetic may be in the form of a solution, a lotion, cream, stick, spray or aerosol. The compositions may be applied topically to inhibit sweating of the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet and the forehead (e.g. in the case of surgeons).
