Abstract
939,942. Shoe shanks. C. BARTH. Dec. 21, 1959 [Dec. 20, 1958], No. 43344/59. Class 17 (2). A shoe shank reinforcing element 1 has a rebate to receive the margins of the upper, and a holder on its lower surface for a reinforcing insert 5, the holder having tongues 8<SP>1</SP> flush with the lower surface for clamping the insert. The element may be secured to the last or the heel by a screw passing through a bore 3. Resilient insert 5, e.g. of steel, has a slot 9 to help in locating the insert, a forked end 7, and a rib 6. The element is mounted between an insole and an outsole and heel, with the margins of the upper glued into the rebates formed by the central thickened portion 1<SP>1</SP>. A blank with a groove 8 is moulded from plastics material, member 5 is inserted in groove 8, and the blanks and member 5 are moulded to form the tongues 81 and give the required shape; the member is then cured. In a continuous manufacturing process the plastic material is originally extruded as a continuous band of desired thickness.
