Abstract
939,707. Shrinking paper to make it extensible. CLUPAK Inc. May 29, 1961 [June 1, 1960], No. 19380/61. Class 96. A machine for making paper extensible without producing crepes therein, comprises two parallel non-rotating rods 11 and 12, Figs. 2 and 3, forming a nip A, and an endless blanket 10 having a smooth, resilient, e.g. rubber surface, 14. The blanket is passed through the nip and carries with it, adjacent its surface 14, a web of paper 15, e.g. moistened, along part of the surface of the rod 11 between the nip A and a position B, and thus through a shrinking nip 13 between the said surface and the blanket. The machine also comprises means, including a steam chest 20 and a longitudinal slot 33 in the hollow rod 11, for injecting steam 18 between the paper web and the adjacent surface of the rod 11. The opposed longitudinal faces of the slot may be parallel and spaced by strengthening bridges 38, Fig. 4, and may be inclined in the direction of blanket travel, e.g. at 25 to 35 degrees to a tangent plane to the rod 11 at the slot. The rod 12 may be moved towards or away from the rod 11 to vary pressure at the nip. Water 34 may be sprayed, from a pipe 35, on to the rod 12. A dilute aqueous solution of a silicone, e.g. a silicone oil, 36 may be sprayed, from a pipe 37, on to the paper web. The axes of the rods 11 and 12 may subtend an angle other than a right-angle with the direction of travel of the blanket and paper web. Specification 880,438 is referred to.
