A process for the reduction of iron ores comprises effecting reduction-chlorination at an elevated temperature in the presence of a carbonaceous reducing agent to produce gaseous chlorides of iron and some gangue materials, effecting oxidation-chlorination in the absence of any reducing agent with the production of solid oxides of most of the gangue materials and additional ferric chloride, separating the gas from the other substances, condensing ferric chloride from the gas, and recovering the ferric chloride. As shown, ore and chlorine gas pass in counter-current through at least two chambers, which may be cyclones, one containing fresh ore -the oxidation-chlorination chamber-and the other the waste ore from the first to which coke has been added-the reduction-chlorination chamber. The ferric chloride may be oxidised to produce iron oxide and chlorine, the latter being recycled and the former reduced to iron, e.g. by means of hydrogen which may be obtained from the electrolysis of salt used to produce chlorine for the process.
