Abstract
939,649. Corrugating. JAMES BURN & CO. Ltd. May 1, 1962 [May 3, 1961], No. 16688/62. Class 83 (4). A wire forming machine comprises two opposed sets of die blades which are continuously movable in such a way that the blades of one set mesh with those of the other during a portion of their travel so as to form wire passing between the blades into a series of bends, alternate bends having the shape of the blades of one set, and two rotatable die rolls each having a helical groove the pitch of which diminishes in the direction of movement of the wire, each groove being arranged to receive alternate apices of the bends of the wire formed by the die blades and to more closely form the bends to a desired shape. Wire 11 fed through a guide 12 passes between intermeshing blunt blades 15 and sharper blades 16, carried by opposed endless chains 13, 14 which form the wire into zigzag shape. The bent wire then passes between die rolls 19, 20 having helical grooves 21, 22 to engage the apices of the bends in the wire. The grooves decrease in width and pitch towards the ends of the rolls in the direction of travel of the wire so as to squeeze the bends into parallel finger shape. The groove 21 in the roll 19 is narrower and decreases in width more rapidly than the groove in the roll 20. Die members 25, 26 at the end of the groove 21 on the roll 19 pinch the tips of the bent wire to the form 23, Fig. 5, and die members 27, 28 on the roll 20 at the end of the groove 22 give a set shape 24 to the opposite wire tips.
