Abstract
A method for the production of ingots and castings comprises locating in the mould or the head-box or riser thereof an exothermic product consisting of a major portion of a composition which is not directly ignitable in contact with the molten metal but which retains its shape when burnt out, in association with a minor proportion of exothermic material having much greater sensitivity to ignition. Both compositions may consist of aluminium, an oxidising agent, fluoride and a filler, the greater sensitivity being obtained by variation of composition or by use of very finely divided aluminium, or the more sensitive material may be a readily oxidisable substance such as magnesium or silicon. The more sensitive material may be present as a layer on a preformed body of the major constituent, or as inserts therein. For example wire, cord or tube, e.g. of woven synthetic fibre may be coated by immersion in a slurry of the more sensitive material, placed in position and the less sensitive material rammed round it. When surface finish of the insert is important the major constituent may be faced with an inert, metal-impermeable material, plugs of sensitive material being located in that surface and extending through to the less sensitive backing.
