Abstract

939,173. Securing hubs on shafts. DODGE MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. April 26, 1961 [May 19, 1960], No. 15156/61. Class 80 (2). A wheel, pulley or bearing race hub 17 is secured to a shaft 3 by a setscrew 14 in a collar 12 having an inwardly directed flange 13 surrounding the end of the hub and which setscrew passes through a clearance hole 16 in the hub and grips the shaft 3. A slot is provided between the hole 16 and the end of the hub 17 so that on disassembly any burrs on the shaft formed by the setscrew biting into it pass through the slot on axial movement of the hub. The position of the setscrew 14 relative to the collar 12 and the thickness of the collar are so selected that the deformation of the collar caused by tightening the setscrew lies between one and there thousandths of an inch. In Fig. 7 (not shown), the hub is keyed to the shaft and the setscrew in the collar passes through a clearance hole in the hub and grips the key.
