Abstract

Refractory parts composed of carbides, nitrides or borides of the refractory metals W, Mo, Ta, Nb, Ti and Zr, are joined by applying a paste which comprises a mixture of one or more refractory metal powders, namely Ti, Zr, W, Mo, Ta, Nb and a powder consisting of carbon and/or boron with sufficient bonding material of synthetic resin, which is liquid at room temperature, to form a paste having a consistency similar to that of cement mortar. An example given is a paste composed of powdered molybdenum and petroleum coke with a polyester based resin (see Group IV(a)) with a setting catalyst such as methylethylketone hydroperoxide. Other compounds used as catalysts are diaryl or diacyl peroxides, e.g. cyclohexanone hydroperoxide, benzoyl peroxide, lauryl peroxide, or amines, e.g. dimethylaniline. The refractory surfaces coated with the paste are then sintered.ALSO:A paste, for jointing and assembling refractory parts composed of carbides, nitrides or borides of the refractory metals W, Mo, Ta, Nb, Ti and Zr, comprises a mixture of one or more refractory metal powders, namely Ti, Zr, W, Mo, Ta, Nb, and a powder consisting of carbon and/or boron with sufficient bonding material of synthetic resin, which is liquid at room temperature, to form a paste having a consistency similar to that of cement mortar. An example given is a paste composed of powdered molybdenum and petroleum coke with a polyester based resin with a setting catalyst such as methylethylketone hydroperoxide. Other compounds used as catalysts are diaryl or diacyl peroxides, e.g. cyclohexanone hydroperoxide, benzoyl peroxide, lauryl peroxide, or amines, e.g. dimethyl-aniline. The refractory surfaces which are to come into contact are coated with the paste and the whole assembly is then sintered.
