Abstract
938,372. Tubular heat exchange elements; refrigerating. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 29, 1960 [Jan. 30, 1959], No. 3377/59. Classes 29 and 64 (3). A heat-exchanger comprises two tubular elements 11, 12 conveying two heat-exchanging fluids such as vapour and liquid refrigerant in a domestic refrigerator, the tube elements being held in thermal contact over at least a part of their length by a tightly-fitting sheath of non- metallic material, preferably polyvinyl chloride. The sheath may comprise a tape wound tightly around the two tube elements 11, 12 but in the form shown it comprises a preformed tube which is softened, stretched over the elements 11, 12 and allowed to shrink to a tight fit. The sheath may be deformed as e.g. by jaws 14, 15 to fit closely around the elements 11, 12 during drying as shown in Fig. 3. In Fig. 4 the interspaces between the elements 11, 12 and the sheath is filled with a heat-conducting material which may be a liquid, resin or jelly or a mastic compound and may be loaded with a metal powder to increase its heat conductivity. Fig. 5 shows a form in which the tube 11 is deformed to receive the tube 12. Several passes of the tube 12 may be maintained in contact with the tube 11 as shown in Fig. 7. In a further form, the tube 12 may be wound helically around the tube 11a (Fig. 8, not shown).
