937,979. Washing machines. MASCHINENFABRIK AD. SCHULTHESS & CO. A.G. Dec. 21, 1961 [Nov. 3, 1961], No. 45769/61. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XVIII] A coin-freed washing machine has punched programme cards 7 arranged on a rotatable drum 6 so that a selected card can be brought between a light source 26 and a photo-electric scanning head 29 which through amplifiers and relays controls the carrying-out of the programme and the coin-freeing means (see Group XVIII) has a comparative circuit which, if the value of the coins inserted is equal to the price of a selected programme, establishes an electric connection for the performance of the programme. A housing 2 on top of the machine incorporates the drum 6, amplifierrelay units 41, 42 and the coin-freeing device 5. The scanning head 29 is pivoted on a rod 31 so that it can ride over the cards 7 when the drum is rotated by a knob 14 for selection of a card 7 and is slidable along the rod for scanning of the card by a nut 34 and a threaded spindle 35 rotated by a reversible motor 37 through reduction gearing 36. For rapid return of the head, one stage of the reduction gearing is cut out at the end of a washing cycle. The light from the fluorescent tube 26 is reflected through a window 28 in a cylinder 16 by a reflector 27 and the card is visible through a window 9. During an initial period of one minute, a button 22 can be pressed to stop the machine and have the inserted coins returned, but subsequently the button 22 is inoperative and the main door 23 is locked against opening.
