937,966. Floating roofs for tanks. J. H. WIGGINS. Nov. 10, 1961 [Nov. 21, 1960], No. 40300/61. Class 69 (1). A sealing mechanism for a tank having a floating roof with upstanding peripheral side walls 24 between which and the tank wall 12 an upstanding annular sealing element 40 of composite construction is arranged with its top above the top of the liquid in the tank and its bottom submerged in the liquid 11; which element 40 comprises overlapping segments 41 of steel or reinforced plastic supported on the wall 24 by pantograph linkages 70, connected by clamping elements 50 and urged outwards by resilient cellular blocks 60 to press against the tank wall the upper sealing section 81 of synthetic rubber-like diaphragm 80 whose middle section 82 lies in contact with the surface of the liquid 11. The diaphragm 80 is attached to the element 40 and to the wall 24 as shown in Fig. 2 and conforms with the walls at 82a and 82b due to gravity and fluid pressure respectively. An outlet pipe 98 can relieve pressure and vapour. The diaphragm moves up and down with the liquid as indicated by the dotted lines if the weight is increased by snow &c. on the roof. A weather shield 100 is fixed to the top of the element 40. In an alternative shown in Fig. 7, the segment 141 is shaped to permit interposition of a cushioning layer 143 and an air-space 142. An air space may be provided with a flat segment by relieving the mid-portion of the sealing diaphragm 81 (Fig. 8, not shown). Another alternative assembly of segment, diaphragm and cushion is illustrated in Fig. 9 (not shown).
