Abstract
Magnesia bricks containing 0,1-0,5% of one or more boron compounds (calculated as B2O3) are employed in regenerators in industrial furnaces e.g. tank furnaces for glass manufacture. The boron may be introduced by impregnating the bricks, but preferably by mixing boric acid, alkaline earth metal borates or borax into the refractory batch from which the bricks are made. Thus such boron compounds may be added to sintered or unsintered magnesia which is then formed into bricks, after sintering if necessary. The bricks are resistant to rehydration, have good thermal shock resistance and high refractoriness under load. The regenerator may be a grate checkerwork. Application 21483/1900 and U.S.A. Specification 2,571,101 are referred to.
