Abstract

1-(21,41,61- Trichlorophenyl) - 3-{411-[a -(2111, 4111- di-tamylphenoxy)butyramido]anilino}- 5-pyrazolone is made by treating the corresponding 3-(411-aminoanilino)- 5-pyrazolone with acetonitrile and a -(2,4-di-t-amylphenoxy)-butyryl chloride. The 3-(411-aminoanilino)-5-pyrazolone is made by hydrogenating the corresponding nitro compound obtained on treating with caustic soda the compound formed by condensing the corresponding 3-amino-5-pyrazolone with acetonitrile and a -(p-nitrophenoxy) acetyl chloride. The 1-(21, 41,61-trichlorophenyl)- 3-amino- 5-pyrazolone is made by treating 2,4,6-trichlorophenylhydrazine with ethyl-b -ethoxy-b -iminopropionate in the presence of sodium ethoxide and acidifying the product with acetic acid. The corresponding 1-(phenyl) compounds may be made by similar methods. The final products are intermediates in the formation of colour couplers (see Groups IV(c) and XX). Specifications 598,174, 599,377, 617,247, 635,841, 702,255 and 711,488 are referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises colour couplers of formula <FORM:0937621/IV(a)/1> where R is a phenyl radical which may contain halogen atoms in the 2, 4 and 6 positions, R1 is H or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 C atoms, R11 is an alkyl or alkoxy group of 1 to 12 C atoms and X and Z are alkyl groups of 1 to 20 C atoms. Compounds in which either X or Z may be H are also described. The couplers are made by conventional processes of diazotization and coupling. R is specified as a phenyl or 2,4,6-tri-chloro-, -bromo-, -iodo- or -fluorophenyl radical. X and Z preferably have 1 to 15 C atoms and R11 preferably has 1 to 6 C atoms. The dyes are used in colour photography. They are yellow and form a magenta dye on development with a primary aromatic amine developer. Dyes prepared are 1-(21,41,61-trichlorophenyl) -3-(411-[a (2111,4111-di-t-amylphenoxy) -butyramido]anilino)-4-(4111-methoxy-, -ethoxy, -butoxy-, -dodecoxy- and sec-amyl and 21111-ethoxy-phenyl) azo-5-pyrazolones and 1-phenyl-3-(411-[a (2111,4111-di-t-amylphenoxy) butyramido]anilino)-4-(41111-methoxyphenyl) azo-5-pyrazolone.
