Abstract
Melamine is obtained from urea and/or its thermal decomposition products either by heat treatment alone or pressure and heat treatment of the starting material in the presence of ammonia and a catalyst without a porous and/or cellular structure, the catalyst being a phosphoric acid containing oxide (other than the alkali and alkaline earth oxides) and/or phosphoric acid containing carbon, with a total specific external surface area in excess of 0,1 sq. metres/gm. The phosphoric acid is defined and may be partially replaced by boric, arsenic or sulphuric acid or their mixtures.
