Abstract

937,170 Controlling vehicle height. F.S. ALLINQUANT. July 14, 1960 [July 31, 1959], No. 24582/60. Class 108(2). A vehicle trim corrector device has manual means to put two unequal fluid flow paths connected to a suspension unit into action simultaneously, the action of the greater flow path being controlled by means dependant on the relative positions of suspended and non-suspended parts of the vehicle. Fig. 1 shows a rear suspension layout comprising two hydro-pneumatic suspension units 3, 3<SP>1</SP> each connected to an outer chamber 12, 12<SP>1</SP> of a box 9 by air lines 8, 8<SP>1</SP>. Box 9 has an inner chamber 11 forming a reservoir for high pressure air drawn in by electrically driven pump 13 from the two outer chambers and two electrically operated valves 15, 151 controlling return follow to the outer chambers. The valves will allow a greater return fluid flow than the pump output but are normally spring-closed. Electrical connections are provided as shown in Fig. 2 which includes an optional additional system for the front suspension. When manual switch 24 is closed pump 13 starts withdrawing air from the suspension units lowering the vehicle until microswitches 18, 18<SP>1</SP> close when the normal ride position is reached. These complete the circuit to the valves 15, 15<SP>1</SP> which open allowing air to enter the suspension units to raise the suspension until the micro-switches again open. Thus the vehicle height oscillates about a position determined by the microswitches. Warning lights 27, 271 on the dash panel 25 light when the valves are open and flash when the vehicle height oscillates to indicate to the driver that the switch should be released. In a modification a time switch may be used to release the switch 24. Operating push button switches 37, 37<SP>1</SP>, 38 opens the valves from the reservoir independantly of switch 24 to increase the height to its maximum for jacking the vehicle. In an alternative embodiment of the invention a pump may be used to inject fluid into the suspension units and valves used to control withdrawal of the fluid. Specification 841,464 is referred to.
