Abstract

Isotactic polypropylene which is at least 25% crystalline is stabilized by adding to the polymer a thiopropionate of the general formula, <FORM:0936494/IV(a)/1> wherein each R and R1 is a hydrocarbon radical containing 6 to 20 carbon atoms. The thiopropionate may be mixed with co-stabilizers selected from (1) a phosphite of the general formula, <FORM:0936494/IV(a)/2> where R, R1 and R11 are hydrocarbon radicals containing 6 to 20 carbon atoms, or (2) a thio-bis-(alkyl-phenol) of the formula, <FORM:0936494/IV(a)/3> where R is a tertiary alkyl radical containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms, and each R1 is a normal alkyl radical containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms, or (3) a gallate of the formula, <FORM:0936494/IV(a)/4> where R is a C 1 to 18 hydrocarbon radical. The thiopropionate may be dilauryl, distearyl, dihexyl, diphenyl, dicyclohexyl, or lauryl stearyl thiopropionate. The phosphite may be triphenyl, tribenzyl, trinaphthyl, tricyclohexyl, trinonyl, trieicosyl, or trilauryl phosphite. Suitable gallates are the methyl, propyl, butyl, 2-ethylbutyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl, octyl, dodecyl, and octadecyl esters. Specified thiophenols are 4,41-thio-bis-(6-tert.-butyl-3-methylphenol, 4,41-thio-bis-(6-tert.-octyl-3-methylphenol), 4,41-thio-bis-(6-tert.-butyl-3-ethylphenol), 4,41-thio-bis-(6-tert.-amyl-3-n-butylphenol), 4,41-thio-bis-(6-tert.-octyl-3-n-decylphenol), 4,41-thio-bis-(6-tert.-hexyl-3-n-dodecylphenol), and 4,41-thio-bis-(6-tert.-butyl-3-n-octylphenol).
