Abstract

936,258. Making electrical components; jointing by stamping. MORGANITE CARBON Ltd. June 12, 1961, No. 21082/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXX] A method of making a carbon strip and carrier electrical contact unit comprises first joining together a carrier bar and a plane blank for the sheet metal channel and then, while the carbon strip is held in place along the middle of the channel blank, folding the borders of the channel blank over and tightly against the sides of the base of the carbon strip by a swaging operation. The base of the carbon strip 2 is metallized by spraying with copper or brass to provide a good electrical contact with the channel 3. The mild steel channel-shaped carrier bar 4 has lateral flanges which are spot welded at 6 to the channel 3. The assembly is passed between opposed swaging rollers which deform the edges of the channel 3 into close engagement with the dovetail base of the carbon strip. In a modification in order to save weight the carbon strip is held only at longitudinal intervals in spaced short channels 7 which are spot welded to the carrier bar 4, Fig. 3. The short channels may be formed from a plane strip blank with notched borders so that the web of the channel is continuous whilst the flanges are divided into longitudinal sections 7.
