935,752. Magnetic recording &c. apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 10, 1959 [Dec. 13, 1958], No. 40243/58. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XXXIX] A time delay is produced by having spaced record and playback heads 4 and 5 on a moving record medium 1 the time delay being variable by varying the spacing between the heads 4 and 5 and by varying the speed of the record medium. A coarse control of the time delay is made by selecting one or other of a number of playback heads 5 by means of a switch arm 6 controlled by a solenoid 7. Fine control is made by varying the speed of the record medium as by using a capstan roller 2 driven by an electric motor 9 the speed of which is governed by an input voltage at 10 applied to the motor by way of an amplifier 11. To maintain constant the pitch of the output signals as the speed of the record is varied, the signals may be recorded as phase or pulse-modulations. The tape may be a closed loop and be provided with an erase head. Recording may be made on a rotating disc or drum. More than one recording track may be employed.
