Abstract
935,632. Securing bearings on shafts. O. J. SHAFER. Jan. 5, 1962, No. 550/62. Class 80 (2). A tubular bearing inner race 22, having a concentric bore 40 and a localized hardened race area 30, has a ductile portion 31 terminating in an eccentric cam surface 32 engaged by an eccentric locking ring 13 to be deformed into clamping engagement with a shaft 12. The cam surface 32 is machined with a groove 35 to mate with a lip 39 formed in the locking ring; the locking ring being rotated relatively to the inner race by a C- spanner 41 to deform the thin soft portion 33 into contact with the shaft. In another embodiment, Fig. 12, the ductile end of the race is bored eccentrically to receive a split locking ring 53 which is rotated to deform the race end and clamp the race and ring against the shaft. The ring may have an extension for spannering.
