Abstract

Isoprene is obtained by contacting 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol with alumina having a surface area greater than 200 m2./g. at 260 DEG -270 DEG C. for 1-5 seconds. The space velocity may be 1,7-1,8 vol./vol./hr. using fixed beds (contact time 3-5 seconds) or 10-15 vol./vol./hr. using fluidized beds (contact time about 1 second). Atmospheric pressure is used.
