Abstract
<PICT:0935198/III/1> <PICT:0935198/III/2> <PICT:0935198/III/3> Vapours are condensed by bringing them into direct contact with films 5 of cooling-liquid flowing down vertical plates 4 spaced apart so as to form channels through which the vapours are passed in a horizontal direction. Narrower cross-section of flow is obtained at the vapourdownstream end of the condenser by inserting additional plates 4a. In order to condense steam, water is used as cooling-liquid. The plates may be smooth, perforated or corrugated. The cooling-liquid is supplied to the condenser through inlet 1, and then flows on to the plates through slots between guiding-inserts 3. The mixture of condensate and cooling-liquid collects in sump 10 and is withdrawn through outlet 11 The mixture of non-condensed vapour and air is exhausted through outlet 7. In some cases, it is advantageous to use an assembly of plates with channels which narrow gradually in the direction of vapour-flow.
