Abstract

934,998. Centrifugal separators. BIRD MACHINE CO. Dec. 6, 1961 [Jan. 11, 1961], No. 43770/61. Class 23. In a centrifuge for separating solid particles from liquid and comprising a rotatable bowl 20 having a plurality of ciroumferentially spaced longitudinally extending strips 88 on its inner surface, a solids discharge chamber 68 at one end of the bowl and a helical conveyer coaxially mounted within the bowl and rotatable at a speed different from that of the bowl whereby separated solid particles are moved by conveyer towards the solids discharge chamber, the inner surface of the bowl between the strips 88 is of hard smooth material and the height of the strips and the clearance of the conveyer therefrom are so regulated in relation to the particle size of the solids to be treated that the force exerted by the conveyer on the beds of solid particles deposited between the strips is sufficient to slide them longitudinally along the bowl to the discharge chamber. The bowl drive sleeve 18 is connected to a belt-driven sheave 24 and the conveyer drive shaft 36 is driven from the bowl through gearing 30. The conveyer comprises a casing 38 supporting a helical conveyer belt 40. The slurry enters through a fixed feed pipe 52 and is discharged through an opening 55 and ports 56 to the bowl where the separated solid particles are carried along the bowl by the conveyer and discharged through ports 70 to the chamber 68 whilst the liquid flows over an adjustable dam 78 to a chamber 76. The bowl comprises an outer wall 80 and a liner 84 of hard smooth-surfaced material, preferably coldrolled stainless steel, the strips 88 and liner 84 being secured together and to the wall by bolts 82. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the liner and strips are confined to the frustoconical portion of the bowl and the strips are helical. If desired, the liner may be dispensed with. Instances of suitable strip heights and conveyer clearances are given in the Specification. Specification 667,594 is referred to.
