The bearing surfaces of piston rings 3 are rounded by relative reciprocatory movement in a honing barrel 1 having at least one peripheral groove 2 around its internal surface shaped as shown, the rings maintaining contact with the housing surface through their inherent radial tension. The mandrel carrying the ring or rings permits of axial play during reciprocatory movement, which may be effected by the honing barrel or the mandrel, or both.
