934,866. Applying sealing strips to packages. O. V. CHRISTENSSON. June 9, 1961 [June 23, 1960], No. 20911/61. Class 73. [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for sealing cardboard packages which have closing flaps comprises automatic means for spacing the packages, an arrangement of rollers, Fig. 5 (not shown), for applying sealing strips to the top and bottom of the packages, knives for cutting the strips and rollers for pressing the strips against the packages, the operation of the apparatus being controlled by the packages through switch mechanism. Pressure from succeeding packages pushes the leading package over idlers 10 against retaining hooks 12 where it overlies an endless conveyer 13. Three packages A, B, C, Fig. 1, operate switches 19, 20, 21 respectively to keep the motor driving the apparatus running. A switch 22 closes when it is no longer in contact with a package D to withdraw the hooks 12 thereby allowing the next package to advance into contact with switch 22 and effecting spacing of the packages. A further switch 23 energizes cutting apparatus 18. As shown in Fig. 6, the packages 87, 88 may be carried on spaced-apart conveyer bands 68, 69 allowing the sealing of closing flaps at both top and bottom. In that case the switch 23 energizes electro-magnets 113, 114 thereby causing knives 89, 90 to cut the sealing strips and effecting the simultaneous application of rollers 119, 120 and 121, 122 to press down the strips against the trailing and leading edges of adjacent packages. Both knives and rollers are pivoted and spring- loaded to enable them to follow the movement of the packages. Pressure on the trailing edges of packages is completed through a switch 24 by a further roller, Fig. 7 (not shown).
