Abstract
934,610. Photo-electric control systems. E. K. COLE Ltd., and J. A. JACKSON. June 21, 1962, No. 24398/61. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XL (c)] The gain of an amplifier is controlled by a light sensitive cell used as a variable resistor in the input circuit, the light affecting the cell being obtained from a lamp energized by electric impulses derived from the ignition circuit of a motor car or the like. Lamp LP2, Fig. 1, shunted by resistor R1, is coupled to the distributer contacts of the car over capacitor C1, auxiliary lamp LP1, and an R.F. suppressor circuit comprising choke CH 1 and shunt capacitor C2. In a car radio receiver light sensitive cell P, Fig. 2, forms with the volume control R2 a potentiometer between the output of the diode detector and the input of audio amplifier V1. Resistor R4 applies a positive bias to the cell P in order to prevent distortion which occurs if the voltage across the cell becomes zero. Lamp LP2 and cell P are placed at either end of an opaque tube in order to exclude extraneous light, a green filter being interposed so that the cell is not affected by red light. The arrangement is such that as the speed of the engine increases, the number of differentiated pulses from capacitor C1 increases and so the brightness of the lamp LP2; this reduces the resistance of the cell P and so increases the volume with receiver. Lamp LP1 acts as a voltage variable resistor, increasing its resistance as the number of impulses increases, and so prevents the rate of increase of illumination of the lamp LP2 being too rapid; this effect may also be produced by replacing resistor R1 by a Zener diode.
