Apparatus for shifting a railway track laterally comprises a wheeled chassis carrying a frame supporting a weight which is movable transversely of the rails and means at the end of the stroke of the weight to absorb the momentum of the weight and transfer it to the track. As shown, Fig. 2, a frame comprising plates 48, 49 carries tubular members 22 fore and aft which co-operate with rollers 28 on wheel frames 26 when hydraulic cylinders 29 are actuated first to lower the frame to rest on sleepers 12 and then to raise the wheel frames 26 from the rails 11. Locking dogs 56 pivotally mounted at 57, Fig. 4, on each plate 48 are then moved outwardly by hydraulic cylinders 59 to bear against the rails 11. A pair of weights 42 rigidly interconnected by an I-beam 43 carry rollers 47 which run on cross plates 51. To shift the track laterally the weights are moved along the plates 51 by a double-acting cylinder 53, the degree of displacement of the track depending on the distance over which the weights are accelerated. Resilient pads 52 on the plates 48 receive the impact of the weights which is transferred via plates 51 and plates 58 supporting the cylinders 59 to the dogs 56 which bear against the rail 11. To move the apparatus laterally from the track the wheels 32 are pivoted by cylinders 34 to the dotted line position of Fig. 2 and auxiliary rails inserted between the rails 11 and the wheels.
