[Also in Group XIX] A printing machine of the kind comprising an anvil for receiving thereon a book, each of the leaves of which is to have the same particular impression printed thereon by a printing head, which head is arranged for movement towards the anvil to print an impression on the top leaf of a book thereon and then to be withdrawn so that the top leaf can be turned over to allow the head to be operated to form said impression on the next leaf, is characterized by the provision of a mechanism facilitating the turning of the leaves. In the manually-operated machine shown, successive cheques of a cheque book are printed with the depositor's name and number by a platentype printing head 2, a printing plate 10 being held horizontally beneath a block 7 mounted through a parallel linkage arrangement 3, 4, 5, 6 to swing about a platform 1 such that the surface of the plate 10 is always parallel to the platform. Inking ribbon supply and take-up spools 26, 29 are mounted on the block 7, downward movement of the latter during a printing operation actuating a pawl-andratchet mechanism 31, 30 which moves the take-up spool through one tooth pitch such that a fresh portion of ribbon is disposed beneath the plate 10 for every printing operation. The head 2 is upwardly spring-biased such that on release of the manually-applied downward pressure it springs upwardly and allows a spring-propelled finger 61 of a mechanism 45 to move across the top and newly printed cheque to cause it to bow such that it may easily be lifted by hand and turned to allow the cheque immediately beneath to be imprinted during the next printing operation of the head 2. As the head descends during this operation, a member 6, Fig. 6, of the parallel linkage arrangement contacts a wheel 49 on the extension 48 of a shaft 47 such that the latter rotates to withdraw the finger 61 against spring pressure. During such movement of the head a counting apparatus 73 is also actuated. The platform 1 is fitted with suitable members 37, 35, 44 for aligning and securing the book to be printed.
