Abstract

The invention comprises N-3-indoloyl-N1-isopropyl- N1-benzylhydrazine, derivatives thereof wherein the indoloyl residue may be substituted by one or more alkoxy groups and acid addition salts thereof together with a process for the preparation of N-3-indoloyl-N1-isopropylhydrazine and derivatives wherein the indoloyl group is alkoxy substituted by hydrogenolysis of the N1-benzyl analogues. The process may include the further steps wherein the N-indoloyl starting material is prepared by reacting N-benzyl-N-isopropylhydrazine with an acylating derivative of indole-3-carboxylic acid or an appropriate alkoxy substituted indole derivative and wherein the N-benzyl-N-isopropylhydrazine is prepared by the reduction of N-benzyl-N-nitroso-isopropylamine. Indole-3-carboxylic acid chloride is prepared by reacting the free acid with thionyl chloride. Similarly is prepared 6-methoxyindole-3-carboxylic acid chloride. Ethyl 6-methoxy-indole-3-carboxylate is prepared by Grignard synthesis using 6-methoxy indole and ethyl chloroformate. The ester is hydrolysed to give 6-methoxyindole-3-carboxylic acid.
