Abstract

933,018. Measuring electrically. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Sept. 22, 1961 (Nov. 29, 1960], No. 40930/60. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for measuring the speed of a railway vehicle comprises an endless roller chain 10 mounted on sprocket wheels 14, 14a, between rails 11, spring-loaded catches 17 attached at intervals along the chain being engaged by the axles of a vehicle passing over the chain, the rotation thereby imparted to the sprocket wheel 14 being transmitted via a pulley 19 and belt 20 to a tachometer generator 21 to produce a voltage which is directly proportional to the velocity of the vehicle. This voltage is converted to D.C. and compared with a " velocity required " signal in a speed control panel the output of which is fed to an electropneumatic control valve in a retarder 13 controlling clamping members 12. Several chains &c. may be used in various sections of a retarder. A chain may also be used to drive a pump or generator to operate the thruster of a Saxby type retarder.
