Abstract
In a process for selectively removing hydrogen sulphide in preference to carbon dioxide from a gas containing ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide, the gas is scrubbed in a first stage with a circulating ammoniacal liquor containing a higher concentration of ammonia than that corresponding to the equilibrium with the ammonia content of the gas and in a second stage with gas condensate. Liquor from the first stage is regenerated in a deacidifier and the liquor from the second stage is distilled and the vapours containing ammonia and hydrogen sulphide passed into the deacidifier. Liquor to be regenerated in the deacidifier is divided into two portions one of which is fed to a central section of the deacidifier immediately above the point of introduction of the vapours containing ammonia and hydrogen sulphide derived from liquor from the second stage, and the other at the top of the deacidifier to scrub the vapours rising up the deacidifier, the relative size of the two portions being selected to produce a regenerated ammoniacal liquor having the desired content of ammonia. Vapours containing unabsorbed ammonia and hydrogen sulphide passing over from the deacidifier are passed through a saturator and then for recovery of the hydrogen sulphide. Both the liquor regenerated in the deacidifier and the gas condensate are cooled before being used in their respective stages.
