932,889. Electric selective signalling systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 8, 1962 [Feb. 22, 1961], No. 6514/61. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XIX] In a multiplying circuit in which two input numbers are represented by the amplitudes of two D.C. signals 1, 2, Fig. 1, the first signal is converted into a pulse train 11 having a frequency proportional to the first number and the second signal is converted into a signal 13 having a duration proportional to the second number, and this duration significant signal is then arranged to gate 12 the frequency significant signal whereby pulses are produced which represent, by their number, the product of the first and second input numbers. The first conversion, from amplitude to frequency, is effected by a variable frequency oscillator (Fig. 2, not shown), using transistors and a saturable reactor, and the second conversion, from amplitude to duration, is effected by comparing 4 the amplitude with a linearly increasing reference signal and by turning off a trigger 6 when equality is attained.
