Abstract
Aqueous pharmaceutical compositions comprise at least about 40% by volume of water having dissolved therein at room temperature more than 0.83 g. of theophylline per 100 ml. water and, as a solubilizing agent and expectorant, guaiacol or a pharmaceutically acceptable water-soluble derivative thereof, e.g. a glycerol guaiacol ether, potassium guaiacol sulphonate or the hemiacetal condensation product of guaiacol and alloxan. Preferred compositions may contain up to about 20% by volume of ethanol and sucrose as a sweetening and additional solubilizing agent. Conventional excipients, e.g. preservatives, flavours and colouring may also be present.
