Abstract

932,030. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. March 1, 1962 [March 2, 1961], No. 7940/62. Class 42 (1). A method of forming a fluid-tight seal between two thermoplastic components having complementarily shaped interengageable surfaces, one component being formed with ribs to engage grooves in the other component, comprises applying heat only to the marginal regions of the components to soften the material thereof, thereafter pressing the surfaces into engagement and maintaining the pressure whilst allowing said marginal regions to cool. A synthetic resin cover 1 for a housing 10 of an accumulator battery is provided with filler apertures 2 and holes (not shown) through which the terminals pass and has grooves 3 to receive the upper edges 9 of the cell dividing walls of the housing 10. The material surrounding the grooves 3 is heated by parallel elements 5 of a device 4 brought close to, but not touching, the cover 1. The elements 5 are heated by wires 8 supplied with current through a connection 7. Simultaneously, heating elements 12 of a device 11 radiate heat to the edges 9. The devices 4, 11 are removed and the cover 1 fitted on the housing 10 and the two parts pressed together. The grooves 3 may be of less width than the edges 9. In a modification (not shown) the devices 4, 11 are replaced by a single device. In a further modification (also not shown) hot air or a heated inert gas may be blown, through nozzles, on to the parts to be sealed. In a still further modification, heat is applied by devices which contact the surfaces to be sealed.
