Abstract
931,406. Hydraulic couplings. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1959 [Sept. 17, 1958], No. 29223/59. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic coupling comprises an impeller member 12 and turbine member 20 having confronting shells 16, 22 and a plurality of vanes 40, 42, at least some of the vanes having apertures 48 therethrough to reduce the pressure on the vanes, the aperture pattern on certain of the vanes being different from that on other vanes to break up vibrational stresses. The apertures, which reduce the differential of pressure exerted on opposite sides of the vanes, may be inclined to the surfaces of the vanes and be of varying diameter. They may be provided in the impeller and/or turbine members and be distributed over the areas of greatest pressure, such as the outer peripheries of the members or adjacent the joints between the vanes and shells. Either successively spaced vanes may have different patterns of apertures or alternate groups of vanes may have different patterns. In other embodiments, the apertures may be formed between the vanes and shells by notches 60, Fig. 6, cut into the edges of the vanes or circumferential grooves formed in the inner surface of the shell.
