Abstract

A digital switch controlled, VHF "woken-up" microwave mobile telephone system, comprises mobile apparatus 1c, one or more microwave stations, 2c, mobile switching centre/s, 3c, and a digital switch 4, linked via a VHF radio paging centre, 5p, to VHF radio paging stations, 5. The switch 4, embodies connections/links, 6, to the national telephone network, 7, and the mobile switching centre/s, 3c. Each connection, 6, is allocated a supplementary telephone number for use by incoming callers when the microwave circuits of the mobile apparatus, 1c, are in the switched off or "long sleep life" mode. The switch, 4, incorporates means to initiate a digitally coded VHF radio paging "wake-up" signal, 9, instantly on receipt of the call, together with means, 4mi or 4me, to establish microwave connection of the call to the mobile apparatus, 1c, with a predetermined delay after transmission of the VHF "wake-up" signal, 9. <IMAGE>
