Abstract
930,654. Welding by pressure. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Aug. 12, 1959 [Aug. 12, 1958], No. 6521/63. Divided out of 930,653. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for sealing a semi-conductor device 8 in a two-ended housing having a main housing part, as shown a cylindrical metal tube 1, and a closure part, such as metal cover 6, at one end thereof, comprises a jig 4 formed with a recess 4a to receive the other end of the housing, and also formed with a duct 4b to receive a tube 15 through which a protective gas, e.g. nitrogen, is passed into the housing, a first welding electrode 5 in the form of a plurality of gripping parts which close upon the sides of the housing, a second welding electrode 11 which contacts the closure part 6, means (not shown) for applying a voltage between first and second welding electrodes so as to weld the closure part to the main housing part, and a further welding device, as shown electrodes 16, 17 in passageways in the jig 4, for sealing the tube 15. The cover member 6 comprises a disc portion 6a which fits into the open end of the housing (which may be bevelled at 1d), thus accurately locating parts 1 and 6.
