A horizontal endless conveyer 18 feeds cigarette magazines 2 to an elevating endless conveyer 29, there being a common axis 22 for respective rotary members of the two conveyers. The conveyer 18 is driven in steps from a motor M1 via a Geneva mechanism 46. The motor 66 also drives a Geneva mechanism 47 coupled by a chain drive 38 to an upper drive-shaft 23 of the conveyer 29. Dogs 53 on an endless chain 50 (Fig. 3) displace the magazines 2 from the holders of the conveyer 29 to a guide platform 69. Rocking members 39 engage and displace the magazine from a position 2<SP>11</SP> (Fig. 1) to a vertical position 2<SP>111</SP>. In this position the magazine 2 is engaged by a carriage 1 traversed by a motor M4 (via gearing 55, 56, 57, and toothed racks 59, Fig. 2). During the traversing movement the magazine is inverted by the action of a motor M3. The magazine is thus presented to a hopper 71 into which the cigarettes are emptied, the magazines 2 collecting on a platform 17. The cigarettes issue from shoots 35 and are fed by an oscillatable member 32 and a pushing dog 33 to a conveyer 30 leading to a packing machine. The individual motors M1- M4 may be replaced by hydraulic drives. Photoelectric sensing means may arrest the carriage 1 according to the level of cigarettes in the hopper 71.
