Abstract
930,347. Building tyre head cores. NATIONAL-STANDARD CO. Jan. 20, 1961 [Jan. 21, 1960], No. 2423/61. Class 144 (1). [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVII] Apparatus for building the bead core of automobile tyres and the like comprises a supply reel 11 of wire 10, the wire 10 being drawn off the reel 11 by a haul-off motor 17 through an extrusion head 13 where it is coated with rubber, the rubber-coated wire 15 being fed to a storage device in the form of a festoon having a fixed set of sheaves 24 and a movable set 27, the coated wire 15 being intermittently drawn from the storage device by a winder motor 31, the haul-off motor 17 being controlled to feed the coated wire 15 to the storage festoon at varying rates according to the position of the lower set of sheaves 27. The haul-off motor 17 may be controlled either by voltage variation on the field or armature or by a Ward-Leonard device. Assuming an initial condition wherein the storage festoon in full the sheaves 27 will be at the bottom of their travel with a member 76 causing switch 78 to be operated to stop the motor 17 thus stopping the feeding of the coated wire 15 to the storage festoon. Operation of the winder motor 31 to draw off an amount of wire 15 to build the bead core cause the lower sheaves 27 to move upwardly towards the fixed sheaves 24. This movement causes anti-clockwise movement of a chain 43 whereupon a peg 62 engages a fork 63 to move a slider of a potentiometer 65 to vary the voltage distribution across a potential divider whereby the voltage applied to the motor 17 causes it to speed up and increase the rate of feed of the wire 15 to the storage festoon. Further upward movement of the sheaves 27 causes the peg 62 to operate a switch 70, the operation of this switch causing a resistor to be inserted into the potential divider and also to cause a pilot motor to run to move the slider of a further potentiometer associated with the potential divider the effect of these operations being to alter the voltage distribution to cause the motor 17 to decrease in speed and decrease the rate of feed to the storage festoon. Still further upward movement of the sheaves 27 will cause the member 76 to operate a switch 82 whereupon a second resistor is inserted into the potential divider and the pilot motor caused to run to move the slider of the further potentiometer in the opposite direction whereupon the motor increases speed to increase the rate of feed to the storage festoon. At the top of the travel of the sheaves 27 a switch 85 is operated to stop the winder motor 31. The member 22 causes the motor 17 to stop if excessive slack exists in the feed to the storage festoon whilst the member 28 stops the motor 31 if the wire being taken from the storage festoon breaks, a brake 47 being energized to stop unwinding of the festoon.
