Abstract
929,965. Parenteral liquid containers. BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc. Nov. 10, 1959 [Nov. 10, 1958], No. 38016/59. Class 81 (2). A collapsible parenteral fluid container 10, which is flexible and translucent, has fluid inlet and outlet ports 45, 56 and is housed in a rigidwalled but collapsible receptacle 11 which when uncollapsed has an interior shape and size approximating to the shape and size of the container when filled. The collapsible container 10 has tabs 36, 37 along opposite side edges to which a flap 41, having pockets 42 for sample tubes 43, and a flap 40 are secured, respectively. The receptacle 11 is made from two sheets 11a, 11b of vinyl plastic, each sheet forming two receptacle walls and one sheet having tabs 27, 28 which engage slots 23, 24 of the other sheet. The receptacle is positioned around the container, the joins between the sheets being effected through slots 41a between the container and the flaps. To complete the assembly, the pocketed flap is wrapped over two walls of the receptacle and is covered by the other flap, a tab 40a of which is tucked into a slot 41a. Portions 45, 56 projecting from the exposed top wall 17 of the container are connected respectively to an inlet tube 55 having an end plug 57, which is pierceable by a hypodermic needle, and a sheathed outlet fitting 44 having a manipulatable ball valve. The container is made from two peripherally united superposed hexagonal sheets of synthetic plastic having projections which form the tabs 36, 37 and the portions 45, 56. Each sheet forms two sides of the container, the top and bottom walls being formed by joining each sheet to itself along lines 34 and excess material being cut away from the top wall and formed into a hanger 76 at the bottom wall. The joints along lines 34, and those formed between the sheets form diagonal reinforcing ribs across the top and bottom walls. The receptacle 11 has an upstanding tab 28 which before filling is folded at an angle to one side but which is pivoted into the plane of that side when filling of the container is complete. The receptacle is removed when the container is full.
