Abstract
A non-smoking fuel briquette comprises a finely-divided carbonaceous material mixed with an organic binder, the carbonaceous material having a bulk density between 6 and 20 lbs. cu. ft., a volatile matter content between 3 and 15% and a particle size between 5 and 100 microns and being produced from the flash calcination of bitumimous coal particles at a temperature between 1150 DEG and 2000 DEG F. in a gas stream containing oxygen in an amount between 2 and 4 s.cu. ft./lb. of bituminous coal particles and which have a volatile matter content between 14 and 23% and which although normally solid at ordinary temperatures are capable of becoming plastic and expanding on heating. The bituminous coal particles may be flash calcined in the apparatus described in Specification 786,207 [Group XII]. The preferred binder is corn starch but potato starch, dextrine or any of the binders listed in U.S.A. Specification 2,017,402 other than the bituminous binders. Ignition agents such as alkali nitrates chlorates or chlorides, the oxides of copper or lead and sodium carbonate may be added to the briquette. Other materials such as hickory sawdust and lime may also be incorporated in the briquette.
