Abstract

In a process for producing petroleum coke from a heavy petroleum residuum, coke fines produced are recovered and injected into the coker feed during the coking step. The delayed coking process is employed, in which the bottoms from a fractionator 5 are passed through a heater 15 to a coking drum 16 or 17 at a temperature of 910 DEG to 925 DEG F., and after cooling, crushing and <PICT:0929007/III/1> screening, the coke is delivered to a silo 19 and a rotary kiln 21 for calcining at 2500 DEG F. Gases from the kiln 21 carry coke fines to a cyclone separator 27, which may be wet or dry, the fines being passed to a drum 31 where they are formed into a slurry with an oil, e.g. gas oil from the fractionator 5. The slurry is delivered through line 33 to the drums 16, 17. Fines from areas other than the separator 27 may be employed, e.g. wet or dried fines resulting from removal of coke from the drums 16, 17 may be slurried, as may fines from the feed end 20 of the kiln 21. Alternative to slurrying, fines may be fluidized with a gas, e.g. superheated steam, for delivery to the drums 16, 17. Three examples are described, giving percentages of fines, operating temperatures and pressures, and the introduction of slurried fines with the feedstock through a line 1 is mentioned.
