One or more of a number of cup - shaped rings 15, arranged in axially-abutting sealing contact in a packing assembly between the rod 10 and the housing 12, e.g. of a low-temperature liquid pump, contains a plurality of axially aligned segmental sealing rings 16, 18 of low friction material stacked together with the gaps between the segments of adjacent rings in staggered relationship and retained on the rod 10 by annular springs 26 located, e.g. in grooves, at their outer peripheries. Each sealing ring may consist of a number of alternately overlapping segments, Fig. 3, or of a single or a number of segments formed with a radial gap between its/or their ends. Springs 28 mounted in recesses between the bottom of each ring 15 and a retainer ring 30 exert slight axial compression on each pair of rings 16, 18. The rings 16, 18 may be made of fluorocarbon plastic with fillers, e.g. P.T.F.E. containing particles of glass, molybdenum disulphide, carbon, copper, bronze or mixtures thereof. In a modification as applied to a lowpressure compressor, Fig. 6, the spring-loaded rings 16, 18 are shrouded by a cup-shaped annular member 32 of the same material as the rings which is urged axially by springs 38 into sealing contact with the rings and with the adjacent cup-shaped ring 35.
