Abstract

Peroxides of the formula <FORM:0928695/IV(a)/1> in which Ar is an aromatic or alkyl substituted aromatic radical, R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and X is an alkyl, aryl or alkaryl radical, are prepared by reacting a hydroperoxide of the formula Ar.C(R)2OOH with an aliphatic or aromatic tertiary alcohol of the formula XC(R)2OH in the presence of perchloric acid and in the absence of other acidic materials. Examples describe the preparation of dicumyl peroxide from cumene hydroperoxide and dimethylphenyl carbinol. The reaction may take place between 0 DEG and 95 DEG C. Other starting materials specified are cymene hydroperoxide, di-isopropylbenzene mono- and di-hydroperoxide, isopropylnaphthalene hydroperoxide, tertbutanol, tert-pentanol and tert-hexanol. The method may be effected batchwise or continuously.
