[Also in Group XIII] In an aircraft air conditioning system compressed air is bled from the compressor of a gas turbine engine 10 through pipe 12 and heat exchanger 14, which is cooled by ram air, and is divided into two streams, one of which passes through pipe 18 to the first stage 22 of a two-stage compressor 24 and the other through pipe 20 to a secondary turbine 32, the exhaust air from which is used in heat exchanger 36 to cool air passing from the compressor to a primary turbine 30 via pipes 34, 40 and 50. The. compressor and turbines are mounted on a common shaft 28. A further heat exchanger 42 is located downstream of exchanger 36 and employs liquid fuel which passes through inlet 46 and pipe 48 to the engine 10. Conditioned air from turbine 30 is supplied to an enclosure 54 through pipe 52 and water extractor 53, the temperature of the air being regulated by a throttle valve 39 in the exhaust pipe 38 leading from exchanger 32 under the control of a sensing element 60. An over-riding control 58 dependent on the speed of the shaft 28 is also provided. The conditioned air may be used for cooling or pressurizing aircraft equipment which may be mounted either in series or in parallel with enclosure 54. Additional heat exchangers may be inserted upstream and/or downstream of exchanger 36. Fuel from the heat exchanger 42 may be recirculated back to a fuel tank from which it is drawn.
